What the course covers

The course balances the theory staff need to work lawfully and safely with the physical practice that actually protects people — both the person being supported and the care worker's own back.

Legislation and responsibilities — the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and LOLER 1998 in plain English
Risk assessment before every move — the person, the load, the environment, the equipment
Safer handling principles and protecting your own posture and back
Hoist use and slings — practised on real equipment
Bed mobility, sit-to-stand, chair and wheelchair transfers
What never to do — outdated and banned techniques, and why
Falls — responding safely when someone is on the floor
Recording, reporting and following the care plan

Where You Train

A real care environment, not a conference room

Practical skills need practical settings. Our Liverpool training centre includes a dedicated skills room with a profiling hospital bed, mobile hoist, wheelchair and walking aids — so learners practise on the same equipment they will use at work.

For staff groups we also deliver onsite at your workplace anywhere in the UK, using your own equipment and environment — the most realistic training there is, and the easiest to evidence to inspectors.

Common Questions

Moving & handling FAQs

How often does it need refreshing?
Annual refreshers are the accepted standard across health and social care, and the CQC expects practical subjects to be current. Refreshers must be hands-on — an e-learning certificate does not evidence practical competence. See our mandatory training checklist for how it fits the wider training matrix.
Can it be done online?
The theory can; the practice cannot. Techniques and equipment use must be practised and observed in person, which is why this course is delivered face to face. Our guide on choosing delivery modes explains which subjects genuinely need a room.
What legislation applies?
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended), under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, plus LOLER 1998 for hoists and lifting equipment. The course turns these into practical day-to-day rules rather than legal theory.
Do you come to us?
Yes — onsite delivery for staff groups anywhere in the UK is often the best option, because staff train on their own equipment in their own environment. Individual learners can join sessions at our Liverpool centre.
