Person-Centred Care

This course is designed to provide you with an overview of how you, as a health and social care professional, can implement person-centred care within your organization. Through comprehensive training in care provision and effective communication strategies, you will learn how to prioritize the individual needs and preferences of those under your care. The course also forms the fifth standard of the care certificate course.

Person-centred values serve as guiding principles for working in a person-centred manner. Typically, there are six recognized values for person-centred care, which encompass:

  • Care
  • Compassion
  • Competence
  • Communication
  • Courage
  • Commitment

Alternatively, the 6 Cs underscore the importance of placing each individual at the heart of their care and support plans. It emphasizes the need for personalized plans that align with the individual’s preferences, rather than forcing them to conform to existing routines. This approach is commonly referred to as Person Centred Working.

This course extensively covers these key principles, equipping caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to work in a person-centred manner. It includes an in-depth examination of the legal and regulatory framework, such as the Care Act, as well as tools to support person-centred approaches and enable risk assessment.

On completion of this course, you be able to describe what person-centred care is and how it affects individuals receiving care, understand how person-centred care can be practiced in your role and know the difference between good and poor person-centred care practices. You will also understand the ways a person’s immediate environment may influence their experience of receiving person-centred care, identify how person-centred care is an ongoing process, and describe the ways staff can appropriately report concerns.
